<p>I enjoy going to seminars, as I find it&#8217;s a great way to learn new marketing ideas. I always look for at least one take away idea, I can put into practise, because if you&#8217;re not learning and growing, then you become stagnant and the world will pass you by.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no point having 100 ideas, if you don&#8217;t implement any of them. So write down your ideas and think how you could use or modify these strategies and tactics to grow your grow your business.</p>
<p>Remember the old adage &#8220;A short pencil is better than a long memory&#8221;</p>
<p>Once the event is over and the hype starts fading, I grab my notes and go over them looking for the biggest payoff, or the easiest to implement, so I can take action.</p>
<p>Last week I had the chance see to Jay Conrad Levinson, the father of Guerrilla Marketing, in action. Jay&#8217;s book Guerrilla Marketing was one of my first Marketing Books, I read.</p>
<p>This book laid a solid foundation in my marketing arsenal and the approach I apply with my clients.</p>

However, for it to work successfully you need to bear one thing in mind; networking should not just be seen solely as a sales platform, but as a way for you to exchange business ideas with like-minded individuals. Indeed, one of the greatest mistakes that people make when networking, is that they try to sell their products and services before they have even attempted to get to know someone on a personal level. In this article, I will look at some of the key factors you will need to consider to make networking a fruitful experience for you and your business.</p>
<p>One important question you will need to ask yourself from the outset is, &#8216;Where are the best places for you to carry out your networking?&#8217; Here you have many options. You can attend events run by professional organisations in your particular industry, or you can connect with various interest groups in your local community. Alternatively, you can attend events hosted by your local Chamber of Commerce or Business Link, both of which bring business owners together. However, if you find yourself short of time in being able to physically attend these events, you can always consider networking on the Internet. This can be done in a variety of ways. For instance, you may find it beneficial to sign up to a forum that deals with your type of business. Here you can share lots of ideas and services with the other members. Another good way to carry out online networking would be to make use of the multitude of social media sites available on the internet. There are many to choose from and you cannot help but find something relevant to your business type or interest.</p>
<p>Another key factor to take into account before you begin networking and marketing your business, is to make sure that you have a good idea as to what your Unique Selling Point will be, or USP as it is known. Ask yourself the question, &#8216;What unique services you can offer your future networking contacts?&#8217; It is also a good idea to be clear on what type of businesses you are interested in speaking to when you attend any events or when looking online- &#8216;What type of customers and other contacts do you work best with?&#8217;</p>
<p>Finally, there are a few other factors you will need to be mindful of when networking. As I said at the start of this article, do not see networking as just an opportunity to sell your products and services; if all you do is hunt down business owners with the aim of selling to them immediately, your networking will come to an abrupt end. A better way to view networking is to see it as a mutual activity, where you will make a number of valuable contacts which will help you in a variety of ways and you will be able to help them in return. This of course will naturally lead to more business for you over time, but be patient.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When I first thought of how to market my business, ideas for how to do it were things like.. print a brochure of flier, run an ad, send out some postcards. But I later discovered that&#8217;s actually upside down and is the last of 3 steps in an effective marketing strategy.</p>
<p>Many marketing efforts fail because they don&#8217;t follow the right order of things. We often focus on the fancy glossy brochures, and the image we project. I&#8217;m not against creating an image, by the way, but for small business owners, image is not the most important thing. We can leave that to giant companies with colossal marketing budgets. They can afford to focus countless dollars on &#8220;image-marketing.&#8221;</p>
<p>As small business owners, our marketing budgets are often limited. So when we implement a marketing strategy, the goal has to be &#8220;How can I get my ideal clients to take action, respond, get to know me and my business, and choose to do business with me?&#8221;</p>
<p>Logos and fancy brochures may get you some oohs and aahs from friends, family, business acquaintances and even prospects, but they are rarely set up to accomplish the goal of increasing business.</p>
<p>From my experience, here&#8217;s the most effective order of things for implementing your marketing actions:</p>
<p>1) Who: When you think of marketing your business, the first thing to think about is the profile of the person to whom you are targeting &#8211; your target market. Who are they, what&#8217;s their greatest need in your area of expertise, and how do they express that need. The answers are what you put into your marketing.</p>
<p>2) What: And what you put into your marketing is the message that is specifically tailored to your target audience. That message must resonate so strongly with their problems that they prompted into action. Action that makes them pick up the phone, go to your web site, etc.</p>
<p>3) How: The how is the tool you use to convey the message to your market. The tool or the media is the postcard, the flyer, the ad, etc. If you do not first know your target market, then the message will be weak which then makes the tool/media ineffective. Often people say things like &#8220;postcards don&#8217;t work&#8221; when the marketing process actually failed in steps 1 and 2 above.</p>
<p>When you finally get to step 3 where you are choosing the tool to reach your target market, the question to ask is &#8220;What action do I want them to take?&#8221; And your tool (flier, postcard, ad, etc) must lead them directly into taking that desired action. Don&#8217;t leave it up to the reader to figure it out. Specifically say things like &#8220;Call now for &#8230;.&#8221; &#8220;Click here to&#8230;&#8221; &#8220;Go to for&#8230;&#8221; Always end with a &#8220;call to action.&#8221;</p>

<p>A lot of network marketing has to do with mindset.</p>
<p>One of those aspects of mindset are extremely important and imperative to carrying out any of the strategies that you may learn.</p>
<p>What May Be the Most Important Network Marketing Advice for Making Any Strategy Useful</p>
<p>One of the things that I&#8217;ve noticed in my twenty five years in the network marketing industry is that people often come into this business without a very good reason. They come in very aimless way. They have no real direction of why they&#8217;ve joined other than it just seemed like a good idea at the time&#8230;and a way to make a lot of money according to their upline sponsor.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s really no way to start out on any venture.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s almost a recipe for disaster in fact.</p>
<p>The fact is that PURPOSE is extremely important in any venture that you partake. When it comes to network marketing advice, it&#8217;s one of the pieces of advice that I give out the most. Very likely because I&#8217;ve seen first hand how not having a sense of direction and purpose can be the ultimate death to any network marketing dream.</p>
<p>Purpose is defined by Merriam-Webster as &#8220;something set up as an object or end to be attained&#8221;&#8230;</p>
<p>That last word is very important. What is it that you hope to attain from starting this venture into network marketing? What were you thinking about when you signed up?</p>
<p>Was it making tons of money? That&#8217;s perfectly fine if it was. That&#8217;s a great purpose, if that&#8217;s what you want. But sometimes you have to dig a little deeper to get to the real reason of your purpose.</p>
<p>You have to ask a lot of WHY questions.</p>
<p>Why do you want more money? Why will this help you? What will you use that money for? (okay so that last one isn&#8217;t a &#8220;Why&#8221; question)</p>
<p>Many people are shocked when they do this exercise because they realize that the purpose that they thought they had wasn&#8217;t really even their purpose at all. For instance many people realize that what they would do is quit their job so that they can spend more time with their family. So, the money is just a vehicle for what they really want, which is time freedom. They want to be able to do what they want, when they want, without having to get permission from a boss to do so.</p>
<p>Others realize that they just want to make enough money so they never have to feel the stress of debt and where they&#8217;re going to pay the next bill. While others want to be able to pay their debts, plus the debts of those that they love, and/or the debts of those in their church.</p>

<p>It goes without saying that the ability to manipulate your website content is key. No other medium moves as fast as the internet and you need your business to be able to respond to recent events in ways which can promote your business and help you sell. When considering website design or redesign, ask the web developer about content management and give the system a trial run to make sure that you can create pages, edit text and build promos.</p>
<p>2. Use social networking sites</p>
<p>Only 23% of SMEs use social networking, but 38% of social networking users are looking at business pages online. They&#8217;re all free to sign up and easy to use and the biggest ones can be linked together so that when you update one, the others will pick up the update too, saving precious marketing time.</p>
<p>3. Incorporate your blog into your existing site rather than using WordPress or Blogger</p>
<p>Your blog is an important part of your marketing strategy. Remember that Google is looking to provide informative content to its readers. Your blog allows you to put forward important information and opinions on your specialist subject with the added bonus of promoting your business and your website. If you can, integrate your blog into your website. This means that when Googlebot studies your site, all those juicy links and information will be working as part of your site&#8217;s content, not just as part of an external site linking back to yours.</p>
<p>4. Offer something for free</p>
<p>Whether trying to attract visitors to your Facebook page or drawing people in on the homepage of your website, freebies are great marketing. Make sure it&#8217;s not something too big (or you&#8217;ll arouse suspicion and distrust) but just a little perk to improve your website visitor&#8217;s day.</p>
<p>5. Join local directories &#8211; don&#8217;t just go for blind backlinks, choose quality content.</p>
<p>Think about the kind of places your clients look for you. This may not be online: if they use the Yellow Pages, so should you. The important thing is to be selective: if you blindly sign up to hundreds of directories, you&#8217;ll land up with an ugly homepage full of reciprocal links and may find yourself penalized by Google.</p>
<p>6. Ask previous customers for testimonials, reviews and backlinks</p>
<p>Nothing inspires trust more than reading real comments from real people. When you sign up to directories and websites which allow for reviews, ask some of your customers if they would mind writing a review for you. Make sure they are fairly recent customers and don&#8217;t keep asking!</p>
<p>7. Provide testimonials for your suppliers</p>
<p>In return, you can provide testimonials for those who supply to you. If they like your comments, they may include you on their website, which gives you another free link. If they are a well-known company, this could give you a great juicy backlink from a web site with plenty of visitors.</p>
<p>8. Join discussion forums relevant to your subject matter</p>
<p>This can be another source of backlinks, but it&#8217;s also about getting your name known amongst your peers (who might want you to share their workload in future) and customers. If you can provide help and support on the basis of your expertise, your customers will be much more likely to visit your website and take a look at what else you have to say.</p>
<p>9. Write articles (but beware of duplicate content)</p>
<p>There are many websites where you can sign up and submit articles on topics relevant to your business. If you are going to do this, make sure your work is completely original and never steal content. Don&#8217;t supply the same articles to lots of websites: as of 31stJanuary 2011, Google&#8217;s new algorithms have tightened up even further on duplicate content. If you&#8217;re not sure, use Copyscape to check for your content elsewhere on the web. If you find that others are copying it, Copyscape has great information and advice on what to do.</p>
<p>Some websites (like Suite101) will sell your articles on a pay per click basis, so you could even make some money back (although you need to write quite a lot to achieve this).</p>
<p>10. Consider having Google adverts on your web site</p>
<p>Google adverts are another way of making money from advertising, rather than the other way around. Google will give you a bar of adverts to display on your site and you can make some money from the clicks generated via your website.
